It can be a difficult task to improve upon a product that has been considered the best of the best for more than forty-years. Fortunately, Ford F-150 trucks have built their reputation on handling the most difficult of tasks. The award winning 2018 Ford F-150 doesn't raise the standard for new pickup trucks - it is the standard by which all other pickups will be measured.

As the recipient of the 2018 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award, the 2018 Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award, and the 2018 Truck of Texas Award (by the Texas Auto Writers Association), the new 2018 Ford F-150 is more rugged, more technologically advanced, and more powerful than ever before.

New Features For The 2018 Ford F-150

In all fairness, the appearance of a new truck looks may be a little more important than some of us would like to admit. That's alright because the 2018 Ford F-150 looks amazing. Nevertheless, some of the most notable improvements to this new version of America's most popular pickup have occurred under the hood.

With its most advanced powertrain lineup to date, the 2018 Ford F-150 boasts best-in-class payload, torque production and towing capacity. At work or play, the 2018 Ford F-150 can get it done with a payload capacity of 3,270-pounds and a towing capacity of 13,200-pounds.

Looking for an efficient power-to-weight ratio in your new pickup truck? The new 2018 Ford F-150 is up to 700-pounds lighter than its predecessor. The body is constructed of a military-grade aluminum alloy that is specially heat-treated and hardened then precision mounted to a fully boxed frame that is constructed using almost eighty-percent high-strength steel.

2018 Powertrain Choices

Lighter and stronger equals faster and more powerful - no way around it. Let's take a closer look at the new powertrain choices for the 2018 Ford F-150:

The second generation 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 combines port fuel injection and direct fuel injection (PFDI) with a pair of turbochargers to produce 375hp and 470 lb-ft. of torque (best-in-class).

The 2018 Ford F-150 Raptor will feature a High-Output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 that is more powerful than its 6.2-liter predecessor. With an intercooled twin turbocharger setup and PDFI, the High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost is capable of producing 450hp and 510 lb-ft. of torque.

Another second generation V6, the 2.7-liter EcoBoost also uses two injectors per cylinder (PFDI) and innovative compacted graphite block composition to provide extraordinary performance and outstanding durability. This is the engine that powered an F-150 Off-Road truck through the legendary Baja 1000 race before being driven all the way back to Michigan (with only an air filter replacement). Now, that's Ford tough!

The new 3.3-liter Ti-VCT V6 utilizes variable cam timing and PDFI to help maximize performance and optimize fuel efficiency. Two fuel injectors per cylinder (one in the air intake port and another in the cylinder combustion chamber) help to deliver fuel more precisely so that it can be atomized effectively.

For those of us who believe that a truck must have a V8, the 2018 Ford F-150 offers the Ford V8 Ti-VCT with 395hp and 400 lb-ft. of torque. High pressure fuel is injected directly into each cylinder to extract maximum horsepower under all driving conditions. A natural gas conversion package and a snow plow option are offered when you select this engine.

Even bigger news for the 2018 Ford F-150 is the scheduled introduction (spring 2018) of an all-new 3.0-liter Power Stroke turbo diesel V6. In typical Ford fashion, it will be built to handle severe duty service while providing optimum performance and durability.

Optional with EcoBoost and V8 engines is an all-new electronically controlled 10-speed automatic transmission. This new transmission is designed to provide upgraded acceleration characteristics in low and mid-level power ranges. Widely spaced shift patterns, significant drag reduction, and three overdrive gears will yield increased fuel efficiency and improved torque delivery at the wheels. It will feature five selectable drive modes; Normal, Tow-Haul, Snow-Wet, EcoSelect, and Sport.

Fuel saving Auto Start-Stop is standard on all 2018 Ford F-150 trucks. This feature helps to conserve fuel by shutting the engine down at idle and restarting it automatically when the brake pedal is released. Designed as a Smart feature, Auto Stop-Start is deactivated when pulling a trailer or using four-wheel drive mode.

2018 Diesel F150

Ford unveiled the specs of the new diesel F-150 on January 8, 2018. The big number which we kind of figured we'd see (due to stiff Ram competition) is the achievement of 30mpg highway.

Power specs are 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque, which is best in class. It can tow up to 11,400 pounds and has a payload capacity of over 2,000 pounds.

In April of 2018, Ford released the EPA fuel economy ratings. The truck is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg highway. That's 10.8 L/100km city and 8 L/100km highway. Those numbers are for certain 2WD configurations, 4WD figures are lower.

The 3.0L V6 PowerStroke diesel engine will cost approximately $3,000 to $4,000 and will be available to retail buyers on Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum trim levels. Fleet buyers can get the engine on XL & XLT trims.

The engine is available to order in mid-January 2018 and will be in production in "spring" 2018.
