1984 Ford F-Series F150 F250

Despite being firmly entrenched as the best-selling pickup truck in America, Ford continued to fine tune the F-Series line.

Fuel mileage had become a far less concern, and with the new downsized Ranger carrying the mantle of efficient trucking, the F-Series took some additional steps towards overall capability, and of course, horsepower.

What's New For 1984

After a 30-year run that brought the pickup truck to mainstream America, The F-100 was dropped from the lineup. The best-selling F150 inherited the title as the lightest of the light-duty F-Series, but that didn't mean the F-150 grew softer. In fact, Ford's other big change for 1984 - a high output version of the 5.8 liter V-8 - gave the F-150 more capability than ever before.

Smaller changes were also in effect, such as a new clutch interlock that prevented engine ignition unless the clutch pedal was depressed. Ford also nixed the sporty XLS line, while giving the Lariat trim level a year-long sabbatical. It would return in 1985, but until then, luxury-loving Ford drivers would simply drive an XLT.

1984 F-Series Model Lineup

Standard, XL, and XLT were the only trim options available for 1984, and with the F-100 now relegated to the history books, F-150, F-250, F-250HD and F-350 were the model choices. F-150s still offered a choice between Flareside or Styleside beds; SuperCabs were available for the F-150/250, and the F-350 continued to offer a choice of either a Regular or Crew Cab. Four-wheel drive was available on any model except the one-ton dually.

Ford thankfully saw fit to let the 3.8 liter V-6 exit the F-Series line with the F-100. Other engine options were unchanged from the previous year, with one very notable exception. Throwing fuel mileage to the wind, Ford engineers dropped a big Holley four-barrel carb on the 5.8 liter V-8, and along with some additional tweaking, pulled 210 ponies from the mill.

Transmissions carried over from 1983, though the F-150/250 did receive an automatic with torque converter lockup, which was previously an F-100-only option. The 4.9 liter inline six cylinder was the base power plant across the line, with the exception of F-250HD and F-350 four-wheel drive models, which received the 5.8 liter engine as standard equipment.

The old three-speed manual defied the times by holding on as the stock box for two-wheel drive versions of the F-150/250, while the rest of the lineup relied upon a four-speed manual transmission for cog selection.

1984 Ford F-Series Defects / Recalls

The only official recall (ID 31980) addresses a sticky throttle, due to debris causing the secondary throttle shaft to stick open. Other concerns for this model year are similar to other issues plaguing the seventh-generation F-Series.

Rusty fenders and cab corners are a problem, as well as rust around the mirror mounts on the doors. Ford's sealed front ball joints also have a reputation for premature wear, leading to noisy/loose front end operation.
