1983 Ford F-Series

The progress of technology continued to move in the right direction for 1983, as engineers slowly but surely figured out how to create horsepower while adhering to emission and higher fuel economy standards.

The second oil crisis and subsequent recession were slipping further from the minds of consumers by 1983, however, and as the role of trucks continued further into the realm of multi-use family vehicles, 1983 would signal a bit of a turning point for the F-Series.

What's New For 1983

In a sign of the times, two large F-Series companions returned to the lineup. A Crew Cab could once again be ordered in F-350 form, available only with an 8-foot bed and single-wheel format. The big 7.5 liter, 460 cubic inch V-8 also made a triumphant return, replacing the 6.6 liter V-8 as the largest mill in the lineup.

An all-new 6.9 liter diesel engine offered a good combination of economy and pulling power, while smaller updates like a standard AM radio and the axing of the 1970's era 8-track round out the changes for 1983.

1983 F-Series Model Lineup

Model lineups are a virtual carry over from the 1982 F150, with the major exception being the new F-350 Crew Cab. Standard is still the entry-level model with vinyl floors and no power equipment. XL, XLT Lariat and the sporty XLS fill out the trim levels, the latter of which would be discontinued after 1983.

Also at the end of a very long and distinguished run was the F-100; the lightest of the light-duty trucks would be retired at the close of the 1983 model year, replaced by the F-150 for 1984. Flareside beds were still available with the F-100/150, with SuperCab models available in both the F-150 and F-250.

As with the previous year, the XLS offered a very distinctive look for Ford truck enthusiasts. Blackout treatment on the exterior was extreme - bumpers, door handles, window trim, mirrors, the grille, and even the lock cylinders on the doors were black. Inside, the traditional black or wood appliqué was replaced with a brushed aluminum look. Argent steel wheels and XLS striping completed the package. 1983 would be the last year for the XLS, as styling trends were moving away from the flamboyant tastes of the late 1970s.

1983 F-Series Powertrains

With fuel prices on the decline, manufacturers were inclined once again to offer big-displacement power to consumers. As such, the 7.5 liter workhorse returned to the F-Series as an optional engine on the F-250HD and F-350. A brand new 6.9 liter diesel V-8 built by International also became optional on the heavy-duty trucks, offering a good combination of power and economy.

Electronic Engine Control on the 5.8 liter gave the venerable engine an extra 14 horsepower and 18 lb-ft of torque, while the unloved 4.2 liter V-8 from the F-100 was dropped altogether. The 3.8 liter V-6 would continue as the standard engine for the F-100, though with its demise at the close of the 1983 model year, the 3.8 would also disappear from the F-Series lineup.

1983 Ford F-Series Defects / Recalls

Avoiding the 3.8 liter V-6 in the F-100 is a good idea, as aside from being underpowered for the job, head gasket failures were a common problem. A faulty transmission shift linkage preventing the vehicle from engaging park is the single recall listed for 1983 trucks; other than the typical rust problems and creaking suspension parts of the time, these trucks are quite robust.
