1977 Ford F150

1977 was a year to remember. A wildly fantastic sci-fi film called Star Wars hit the big screen. Apple Computer Inc. opened its doors. And on the automotive front, the Ford F-Series became the best selling pickup truck in America. Looking back through the window of history, it's hard to imagine anyone forecasting just how significant these events were, not to mention the lasting legacy each would build.

As of 2010, the Star Wars franchise is still producing new content for a worldwide audience of rabid fans. Apple Computer continues to revolutionize the rapidly changing world of personal computing and portable technology. As for the F-Series, not only is it still the best selling truck in America, the F-150 is now the best selling vehicle in the world.

What's New For 1977

Exterior badging was downsized and moved forward, from the rear of the bed to both driver and passenger side windshield cowlings. A new mirror design called low-profile swing-lock became an option; the design would ultimately become the main F-Series exterior mirror through 1991.

Two new engine options - 351 and 400 cubic-inch V-8s - replaced the older 360 and 390 V-8 engines. Molded plastic fender liners also appeared first in 1977 trucks, helping to combat corrosion. A new mag-style hubcap injected some much needed aesthetic appeal into the lineup, and the return of the short box Flareside brought some youthful excitement to the F-Series trucks of the day.

1977 Ford F-Series Model Lineup

Camping and cruising were very much in effect through the middle and late 1970s, as evidenced by the Camper Special and Pinstriping Packages available on various F-Series trucks for 1977.

The four main models were still the F-100, F-150, F-250 and F-350, but the return of the 6.5 foot Flareside bed brought a bit more pizzazz back to the Blue Oval. Custom, Ranger, and Ranger XLT soldiered on as the trim levels, with Regular and SuperCab editions available on all models. Crew Cabs were offered on F-250 and F-350 trucks, while the F-350 Super Camper Special with its 140-inch wheelbase remained in the lineup.

Changes were afoot under the hoods of 1977 Ford Trucks. Two new intermediate engine options entered the mix, designed to offer a better combination of power and efficiency over the outgoing 360 and 390 cubic-inch engines. The 351 Windsor V-8 delivered close to 20 extra horsepower over the 360, while the 400 cubic-inch small block offered only a modest 9 horsepower gain from the 390.

The 351 would go on to F-Series superstardom for nearly two decades, but the 400 - which offered little in the way of extra capability - would last for just a few years. The workhorse 300 cubic-inch inline six cylinder and three-speed manual remained the stock engine/transmission combo in the lineup, save for the F-350 SuperCab and Super Camper Special, which used the new 351 and three-speed automatic. A four-speed manual was the only other transmission option.
